“Training of Community Youth Volunteers on Tobacco Control Laws, to Create Them as Peer Educators.”
Tobacco use kills nearly six million people worldwide each year. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates, globally, there were 100 million premature deaths due to tobacco in the 20th century, and if the current trends of tobacco use continue, this number is expected to rise to 1 billion in the 21st century. According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS)-3 survey, conducted in 2005–06, tobacco use is more prevalent among men, the rural population, illiterates, and poor and vulnerable sections of society. According to the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) conducted among 24,000 students aged 13–15 years in 2009, 14.6% of students were tobacco users.
National Law University as a part of its Project on Tobacco Control Initiatives that the University is executing in collaboration with Vital Strategies is launching a statewide program to sensitize and train Youth volunteers of Nehru Yuva Kendra and District Para legal volunteer on the impacts and control of tobacco use On 21 st February 2024 University. The training will be facilitated by tobacco control and legal experts and participants’ capacity will be enhanced on the multidimensional impact of tobacco use, strategy to control tobacco and the role of youth in tobacco control to make Odisha a tobacco-free state. After receiving training trained volunteers will work as community regulators and educators to further strengthen the efforts of state tobacco control programs. The program will start on 21st February 2024, Wednesday from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM. The training Venue is Seminar Hall, Academic Building, National Law University Odisha, Cuttack.
