National Law University of Odisha as a part of its Project on Tobacco Control Initiatives is organising an online national consultation on the enforcement of legislation and policy formulation for advancing effective tobacco control in India. ‘The title of the consultation is Strengthening Effective Law Enforcement for Advancing Tobacco Control in India with Stronger Policy Initiatives’ and is scheduled to take place on April 21 (Friday), 2023, over Google Meet from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The consultation aims to highlight the significance of stronger policy formulation on tobacco control and discuss the best practises on compliance while sharing the challenges and lessons learned while adopting and implementing tobacco control laws in different settings. This event will bring together stakeholders to discuss and address the critical issue of tobacco control in India.
Senior state and national functionaries will explain the importance and significance of stronger policy formulation on tobacco control and advocate for effective law enforcement by stakeholders such as the commercial tax department, excise department, police department, and others. This initiative is essential to ensure that tobacco control laws are effectively implemented and enforced to protect public health and reduce the burden of tobacco-related diseases in India.
Stronger policy formulation and effective law enforcement can play a crucial role in reducing tobacco consumption and improving public health outcomes. Overall, the online national consultation on the enforcement of legislation and policy formulation for advancing effective tobacco control in India is a positive step towards addressing this critical public health issue and promoting effective policy and enforcement measures to reduce tobacco use.

National Law University, Odisha, in collaboration with The Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy is organising the second episode of season 2 of ‘The Green Mandate’ on ‘Public Participation in Environmental Decision Making‘ in conversation with noted environmental and socio-political activist and recipient of Goldman Awardee, Sri Prafulla Samantara. The conversation will take place at the Seminar Hall, Academic Block, National Law University Odisha, in Cuttack, Odisha on 18th April, 2023 from 5.30 pm.
In this session, Debadityo Sinha, Lead, (Climate & Ecosystems), Vidhi will be in conversation with our guest speaker, Sri Samantara, and try to understand the different nuances of public participation in environmental decision making in India. Mr Prafulla Samantara is the president of Lok Shakti Abhiyan, a People’s Forum which campaigns for sustainable development, the right to livelihood, and protection and conservation of natural resources against unmindful industrialization. A recipient of Goldman Prize (popularly known as Green Nobel Prize) in 2017, Prafulla Samantara has over four decades of experience in environmental and socio-political activism.?/p>
‘The Green Mandate’ provides a platform for an in-depth conversation on such issues affecting current conservation challenges. It aims at developing a deeper public discourse on the law and policy aspects of it.

National Law University Odisha is pleased to announce the 4th Sailabala Pujari Memorial Public Lecture on ‘Constitutional Vision of Justice and Role of Judiciary in India’ to be delivered by Hon’ble Ms. Justice (Retd.) Indira Banerjee, former Judge, Supreme Court of India on 20th April, 2023 (Thursday) at 5.00 pm. The lecture will be held in a hybrid mode at 5.00 pm in Seminar Hall, Academic Block, NLUO Campus. The joining link will be circulated later.
The memorial lecture is organized in the memory of Smt. Late Sailabala Pujari, the first woman legal practitioner and Assistant Public Prosecutor of western Odisha. Ms. Pujari has worked extensively on issues relating to child rights, gender, anti -liquor movement and has more than fifty books on social and legal subjects to her credit.

Brief profile of Mr. Arun Bothra<
Mr. Bothra is a 1996 batch IPS officer, currently serving as the Additional Director General of Police, Criminal Investigation Department – Crime Branch (CID – CB) and Transport Commissioner in Odisha. He is well-known for solving high profile cases such as the Patnagarh parcel bombing case and the Nayagarh murder case.
Mr. Bothra has served as the Managing Director (MD) of Capital Region Urban Transport (body that manages public transit systems including MO Bus) and as Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Odisha State Road Transport Corporation. He has been featured along with Elon Musk as one of the ’21Heroes2021′ by the Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative for successful and sustainable mobility initiatives in 2021. He has also been the Inspector General of Police (Crime, Modernisation, Economic Offences and Railways) of Odisha. He has also served as a Superintendent of Police (SP) and Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) of the Central Bureau of Investigation.

The Gender Sensitisation committee has been set up for the students of the university to develop sensitivity regarding issues of discrimination of gender, sexual orientation identity and inclusion. The committee also emphasises on spreading awareness related to sexual harassment, rights of women and sexual minorities among other issues.
In a traditional setup, women are taught to fit into the boxes, to accommodate, adjust in the face of adversity. However, time and again, women broke these shackles,?ursued idealism,?ollowed their passion and actively shaped the world around them, becoming the agents of change.
In light of the upcoming International Women’s Day,?e invite you on?strong>6th March 2023?/em>to the Movie Screening of “Yeh Lo Bayaan Humaare“. A film about the idealism, passion, and the jail time of young women coming of age in the late 1960s, seeking to change the world, and throwing themselves into movements sweeping parts of India. It is about the voices of young women, of what drew them into abandoning the safety of their homes as they were not passive recipients of radical ideas but active shapers of politics, and provides a reflective critique of the politics of the decade of unrest in India.

About Uma Chakravarti<
Uma Chakravarti is a distinguished feminist historian and filmmaker who has taught at Miranda House College for Women, Delhi University. She writes on Buddhism, early Indian history, the nineteenth century, and contemporary issues. Among her many publications are:?em>Social Dimensions of Early Buddhism,?em>Rewriting History: The Life and Times of Pandita Ramabai,?em>Gendering Caste through a Feminist Lens, and many edited volumes. She is closely involved with the women’s movement as well as the movement for democratic rights in India and has been part of many fact-finding teams to investigate human rights violations, communal violence, and state repression.
About Dr. Usha Ramanathan?
Dr. Usha Ramanathan is an Indian Law Researcher and Human Rights Activist. She has been awarded the?strong>‘Human Rights Hero’?y Access Now Organisation in 2018. She is a prolific writer and an editor of various reputed journals. Her columns appear regularly in leading Indian newspapers and magazines on issues relating to torts, displacement, and Reimagining technology.

“State Level Inception Workshop of the Tobacco Control Project at National Law University Odisha”

National Law University Odisha in collaboration with the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease is working on a policy intervention project titled ‘Supporting stronger and evidence-based tobacco control initiatives through capacity building and strengthening laws, policies and institutional mechanisms with multi-stakeholder engagements towards tobacco-free India’. The project will for a duration of two years from 2023 to 2025. The objectives of the project inter alia include strengthening tobacco control laws in Odisha, supporting the Odisha government in adopting stronger policies and capacity building of stakeholders.
To initiation the execute of the project, NLUO is organising its first State Level Inception Workshop on the project on 2nd March 2023 at 10:00 am. The workshop will witness participation from Civil Servants from various State Government Departments, all state actors in the area of NCD, NTPC, Public Health and Tobacco Control, members from serving Police force, the Police and Judicial Academy, State Human Rights Commission, Women Commission, State Commission for the Protection of Child Rights, NSS, civil society and the members of media.
This workshop will bring together all the relevant stakeholders and seek their cooperation and commitment to support NLUO in the successful execution of the Project. The workshop will also serve as an initiation to the capacity building of all the stakeholders in the area of tobacco control. NLUO looks forward to hosting all the dignitaries.
