Brief profile of Mr. Arun Bothra<
Mr. Bothra is a 1996 batch IPS officer, currently serving as the Additional Director General of Police, Criminal Investigation Department – Crime Branch (CID – CB) and Transport Commissioner in Odisha. He is well-known for solving high profile cases such as the Patnagarh parcel bombing case and the Nayagarh murder case.
Mr. Bothra has served as the Managing Director (MD) of Capital Region Urban Transport (body that manages public transit systems including MO Bus) and as Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Odisha State Road Transport Corporation. He has been featured along with Elon Musk as one of the ’21Heroes2021′ by the Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative for successful and sustainable mobility initiatives in 2021. He has also been the Inspector General of Police (Crime, Modernisation, Economic Offences and Railways) of Odisha. He has also served as a Superintendent of Police (SP) and Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) of the Central Bureau of Investigation.

The Gender Sensitisation committee has been set up for the students of the university to develop sensitivity regarding issues of discrimination of gender, sexual orientation identity and inclusion. The committee also emphasises on spreading awareness related to sexual harassment, rights of women and sexual minorities among other issues.
In a traditional setup, women are taught to fit into the boxes, to accommodate, adjust in the face of adversity. However, time and again, women broke these shackles,?ursued idealism,?ollowed their passion and actively shaped the world around them, becoming the agents of change.
In light of the upcoming International Women’s Day,?e invite you on?strong>6th March 2023?/em>to the Movie Screening of “Yeh Lo Bayaan Humaare“. A film about the idealism, passion, and the jail time of young women coming of age in the late 1960s, seeking to change the world, and throwing themselves into movements sweeping parts of India. It is about the voices of young women, of what drew them into abandoning the safety of their homes as they were not passive recipients of radical ideas but active shapers of politics, and provides a reflective critique of the politics of the decade of unrest in India.

About Uma Chakravarti<
Uma Chakravarti is a distinguished feminist historian and filmmaker who has taught at Miranda House College for Women, Delhi University. She writes on Buddhism, early Indian history, the nineteenth century, and contemporary issues. Among her many publications are:?em>Social Dimensions of Early Buddhism,?em>Rewriting History: The Life and Times of Pandita Ramabai,?em>Gendering Caste through a Feminist Lens, and many edited volumes. She is closely involved with the women’s movement as well as the movement for democratic rights in India and has been part of many fact-finding teams to investigate human rights violations, communal violence, and state repression.
About Dr. Usha Ramanathan?
Dr. Usha Ramanathan is an Indian Law Researcher and Human Rights Activist. She has been awarded the?strong>‘Human Rights Hero’?y Access Now Organisation in 2018. She is a prolific writer and an editor of various reputed journals. Her columns appear regularly in leading Indian newspapers and magazines on issues relating to torts, displacement, and Reimagining technology.

“State Level Inception Workshop of the Tobacco Control Project at National Law University Odisha”

National Law University Odisha in collaboration with the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease is working on a policy intervention project titled ‘Supporting stronger and evidence-based tobacco control initiatives through capacity building and strengthening laws, policies and institutional mechanisms with multi-stakeholder engagements towards tobacco-free India’. The project will for a duration of two years from 2023 to 2025. The objectives of the project inter alia include strengthening tobacco control laws in Odisha, supporting the Odisha government in adopting stronger policies and capacity building of stakeholders.
To initiation the execute of the project, NLUO is organising its first State Level Inception Workshop on the project on 2nd March 2023 at 10:00 am. The workshop will witness participation from Civil Servants from various State Government Departments, all state actors in the area of NCD, NTPC, Public Health and Tobacco Control, members from serving Police force, the Police and Judicial Academy, State Human Rights Commission, Women Commission, State Commission for the Protection of Child Rights, NSS, civil society and the members of media.
This workshop will bring together all the relevant stakeholders and seek their cooperation and commitment to support NLUO in the successful execution of the Project. The workshop will also serve as an initiation to the capacity building of all the stakeholders in the area of tobacco control. NLUO looks forward to hosting all the dignitaries.

Background to the Theme:<
In a country that boasts about being the largest democracy, being accountable for one’s actions, especially for those in power is paramount. While legislative and executive accountability is decided by elections, there is a clear lacuna concerning judicial accountability, something which is facilitated by the fact that in the higher judiciary, more often than not existing judges themselves choose who would be elevated as judges. This process, starting from the selection of judges, can have a domino effect on the transparency of the judiciary with an overall effect on the independent administration of justice. This course attempts to navigate the nuances in this area, tracing the ways through which the Indian Constitution necessitates judicial accountability and how the same remains unfulfilled, with a focus on contemporary discourse. The following are the goals of this course:

- Examining the practical aspects that can be incorporated to assess judicial accountability;
- Understand the independent functioning of the judiciary, with a focus on the Indian Constitution and its mandates;
- Analyse the current mechanism of judicial accountability;
- Trace the importance of judicial ethics in the administration of justice;
- Correlate the ideas of judicial accountability with judicial review, judicial activism, judicial overreach, and the collegium system;
- Facilitate the exposure to professionals’ viewpoints and contemporary discourse on this issue;
- Facilitate the application of the newly acquired ideas to policy measures for ensuring increased judicial accountability.

As future professionals in the field of law, understanding the intricacies associated with judicial accountability is necessary, especially if one hopes to contribute positively to its development. Understanding the current mechanisms of judicial accountability will help in the framing of policies necessary for increasing this accountability. These are the issues that the Constitutional Law Society aims to address through this certificate course. This course aims to expand upon practical considerations by drawing on the experience of resource persons, boosting problem-solving skills, and encouraging research, discourse, and awareness on the subject. At the same time, in a bid to add a practical angle to the course and encourage judiciary aspirants, the course shall endeavour to include judgement writing as a facet of ensuring judicial accountability.

Ms. Ayushi Upadhayay;?/strong>an alumnus of Hidayatullah National Law University, Raipur (Batch 2018). Ms. Upadhayay secured Rank 68 in M.P. Judiciary and has been appointed as a Civil Judge in M.P. Judicial Services. She presently serves as a Civil Judge, Sagar, M.P.

Dr. Justice MM Das;?/strong>During his practice as an Advocate, Justice Das conducted many important Civil, Criminal and Constitutional matters in different Courts.?He was also actively associated with many social, philanthropic, and spiritual organisations. By the time he was appointed as a Judge of the High Court of Orissa, he completed a long 29 years of practice at the Bar. He served as Judge of Orissa High Court for 11 years from 2003 to 2014.

This is to bring to your kind attention that the Constitutional Law Society of National Law University Odisha is organizing a?strong>Guest Lecture?n the?strong>11th of February, 2023?n the theme of “State of Legal Education in India: Social Relevance, Accessibility and Inclusivity“?ith?ahul Bajaj?/strong>and?usain Aanis Khan?/strong>as our esteemed?strong>Guest Speakers.
Background
In 1977, Prof. Upendra Baxi authored his widely prevalent essay titled “A Note Towards a Socially Relevant Legal Education“. In his essay, Prof. Baxi extended proposals to reform the qualitative curriculum and pedagogy of the existing system of legal education to meet social and modern needs of society. Prof. Baxi recommended revisions to?nter alia?he structure of law schools, enrolment patterns, curricular profiles, pedagogy, library resources.
However, the state of legal education witnessed little change. Hoping to address the crisis of credibility faced by legal education in India, Prof. N.R. Madhava Menon dared and established the 1st integrated 5-year legal curriculum in 1987, hoping to transpose the American Law School model. This course was tailored to the emerging needs of industry and adopted modern curricular and pedagogic processes. However, the lack of structural reforms since the inception of the first national law school has challenged the diffusion of legal education.
Resultantly, the hope of achieving the reality as envisaged by Prof. Baxi and Menon is far and bleak. The Hon’ble Delhi High Court, as recently as on 11th?anuary 2023, has requested the Bar Council of India to revisit their curriculum and pedagogy to meet the inter-disciplinary demands of the contemporary times.
Apart from the curriculum, the accessibility to quality legal education poses a damp outlook. Over the last 2 decades, there has been a proliferation of law schools. Yet, the accessibility and availability of quality legal education is mired by costly courses and a fa?de of merit. The price of premium law schools is becoming increasingly unaffordable for the common man. At the same time, the mechanism of admitting young pupils to the profession is spread across entrance exams which lay emphasis on the knowledge of English in place of vernacular languages and critical thinking.
Such processes result in the profession of law becoming exclusively a privileged & rich people’s club – while excluding diversity & plurality of backgrounds. Given the importance of legal education in any democratic society, it is essential that the issues associated with legal education be discussed, deliberated and addressed. In this vein, the Society desires to reflect upon the present state of legal education in India that critically requires an overhaul to be socially responsive and accessible.
About our Guest Speakers
Mr. Rahul Bajaj?s a Senior Associate Fellow, Partnerships, in the Research Director’s Office. He manages Vidhi’s partnerships with academic institutions, think-tanks, and other mutually beneficial partnerships. He also works on developing grassroot networks and collaborative partnerships in select areas of Vidhi’s work. He is responsible for coordinating research work in the Research Director’s Office, on Vidhi’s research projects related to COVID-19. Rahul studied law at the University of Nagpur, graduating as the gold medallist in the university. After working at Trilegal, Delhi’s disputes practice for a year, he pursued his postgraduate legal education at the University of Oxford, as a Rhodes Scholar. On returning to India, Rahul clerked for Supreme Court judge D. Y. Chandrachud before joining Vidhi.
Mr. Husain Aanis Khan?s a Research Fellow with the Legal Design and Regulation Team at Vidhi. Husain has worked extensively on the subject of Legal Education and Social Inclusivity. Husain is the Director of the VALE Fellowship. He was the author of the Jamia Diversity Census. He has delivered presentations on education policy at international conferences and submitted a policy brief on Unified Building Bye-Laws to the Government of NCT of Delhi.?e has also contributed opinion pieces for all leading newspaper publications.

“VI Intra University Debating Championship – 14th and 15th January 2023”

The Society of Law, Literature and Debates is thrilled to organise the VI Intra University Debating Championship, which will take place on the 14th and 15th of January 2023. It shall follow the Asian Parliamentary Debating format and will be conducted offline, for the first time in two years. Being its 6th edition, IUDC in the past has witnessed the beginning of great debaters of the college, with each edition laying?own its own legacy. This edition, we will be hosting adjudicators renowned in the international circuit, who promise exciting motions and a debating experience that one can never forget.?/p>
