Single Credit Course on ‘Criminal Justice Institutions in India’ from 15th to 24th February, 2022
The Centre for Poverty and Access to Justice of National Law University Odisha, in collaboration with Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative is organising a Single Credit Course on ‘Criminal Justice Institutions in India’?/strong>for law students from 15th?ebruary to 24th?ebruary, 2022 spread across 8 sessions in two weeks.
ABOUT THE COURSE
The single-credit course of 16 hours focuses on ‘Criminal Justice Institutions in India’ particularly on Police and Prison Reforms, policy, research and advocacy in the area. Under the wide area of Access to Justice, the course is designed around the topics of police oversight bodies, police accountability, the questions of custodian violence as a part of the police reforms. Further, under prison reforms, the course touches on the areas of conditions of prisons, rights and vulnerabilities of the prison population among more interesting topics. The course will consist of lecture, presentation, case study, video, exercise and assessment. Thus, in order to undertake focused learning and cover the different stages in the course, the seats are being limited to 40 students only.
Resource persons for the course will consist of Members of CHRI having undertaken research in the area, Retired Police and Prison Officers, representatives of City Core Group – Mumbai (steered by CHRI) and Civil Society members
About CPAJ
The Centre for Poverty and Access to Justice was established in the year 2020 with the aim of minimising and mitigating the obstacles faced by the socially and economically disadvantaged people in accessing justice. The objective of the Centre is to promote community and traditional justice systems that are relatively easily accessible to vulnerable groups, and to make them more compliant with Human Rights. The Centre aims at studying the barriers to access to justice with emphasis on the groups disadvantaged due to inequality in their economic status, discrimination, and lack of legal awareness; and overcoming the barriers through State, Civil Society and policy Intervention.
About CHRI
CHRI specialises in the areas of Access to Justice (ATJ) and Access to Information (ATI). The ATJ programme has focussed on Police and Prison Reforms, to reduce arbitrariness and ensure transparency while holding duty bearers to account. CHRI looks at policy interventions, including legal remedies, building civil society coalitions and engaging with stakeholders. The ATI looks at Right to Information (RTI) and Freedom of Information laws across geographies, provides specialised advice, sheds light on challenging issues, processes for widespread use of transparency laws and develops capacity.
CHRI reviews pressures on freedom of expression and media rights while a focus on Small States seeks to bring civil society voices to bear on the UN Human Rights Council and the Commonwealth Secretariat. CHRI has special consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council and is accredited to the Commonwealth Secretariat. Recognised for its expertise by governments, oversight bodies and civil society, it is registered as a society in India, a limited charity in London and an NGO in Ghana. Although the Commonwealth, an association of 54 nations, provided member countries the basis of shared common laws, there was little specific focus on human rights issues in member countries. It works on and collaborates around public education programmes, policy dialogues, comparative research, advocacy and networking on the issues of Access to Information and Access to Justice.

This course is open to all the students of NLUO and other law students currently enrolled in a 5-year or 3-year law programme. This course will be particularly helpful to the students from 1st?nd 2nd?ear of five-year law course, 1st?ear students of three-year law course and the students having interest in the field of Access to Justice.

ABOUT THE COURSE
National Law University Odisha with immense pleasure announces that we are jointly with the Cyber Law University organizing a Cyber Law Diploma Course (One Credit and 16 hours) from 1st February, 2022 onwards on theme “Cyber Law and Cyber Security.”?Cyber Law University is an online education platform dedicated exclusively to Cyberlaw and related disciplines. It aims to disseminate knowledge regarding the constantly evolving trends impacting cyberspace and connected paradigms.
The course has been designed, conceptualized and developed by Dr. Pavan Duggal Advocate, Supreme Court of India and Honorary Chancellor, Cyber Law University.
This is a Diploma Course on Cyber Law (16-hours and One Credit Course) covering diversified legal issues related with Cyber Law and Cyber Security. The Course starts from 1st February, 2022.
It focuses on areas of study dedicated to cyber law and legalities pertaining to connected issues including Cybercrime, Cyber Security, Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain and other Emerging Technologies.

The Constitutional Law Society is proud to announce?hat we are organizing the 3rd CLS-NLUO Credit Course (Online) from 22nd January 2022 to 6th February 2022 (Weekdays) on the theme: “The Economics of Constitutionalism: Principles and Practice<“?ith esteemed scholars and practitioners who specialize in the given topic.
ABOUT THE COURSE
Although Economics is taught as a core subject in law schools, there is a gulf existing between the theoretical teachings and practical applications of the subject vis-?vis law and public policy. There is a pertinent need for an interdisciplinary approach to aid students in understanding the functionality of the subject and its applicability in relation to Constitutional Law. Through this credit course, we aim to bridge this gap and enable students to appreciate the inextricable connection between Constitutional Law and Economics in certain matters and expose the students to the relevancy of the same in contemporary times. The goal is to help students to be in a better position so as to:
- Contribute to policy making vis-?vis economic considerations and factors.
- Evaluate the economic analysis behind constitutional questions and the tools and techniques?mployed therein.
- Analyse economic policies and schemes from a constitutional lens.
- Apply the acquired skills and tools in public policy research or think tank set-ups.
- Expose them to the notional thinking of professionals involved in this process. The course will also involve evaluation and class discussions.
- Understand the practical application of classroom teaching in diverse spheres of the legal field.
In view of the COVID-19 pandemic and to allow access to beyond geographical restrictions, the course shall be conducted online through Google Meet. The course shall be spread over 20 hours and classes shall be conducted on weekends from 22 January 2022 – 6 February 2022. The teaching time on any given day shall not extend beyond 4 hours. The course will be concluded with a panel discussion on 6 February 2022 with the theme “Emerging trends in constitutional economics in India and its place in the global scenario”.
The Course Outline has been highlighted in the brochure also attached with the post. Please do note that certificates will be provided to the participants after completion of the course.
COURSE INSTRUCTORS
Prof. Mukul Asher<
Prof. Asher obtained Ph. D. in Economics from Washington State University in 1972. He was a faculty member with the Department of Economics, and later with the Lee Kuan Yew school of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore for over four decades. He has been a Visiting Faculty at the Asian Public Policy Program at Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo since the early 2000s. He is associated with several Indian think-tanks. He is a Distinguished fellow at Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Research Foundation (SPMRF) in New Delhi; and Senior Adjunct Fellow at Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS) in New Delhi. His research focuses on public financial management, pension reform, and on expanding India ‘s geo-economic and geo-strategic space. His stellar list of research and publications includes reputed national and international journals and over 16 books.
Dr. K.P Krishnan<
Dr. Krishnan is a retd. IAS officer (1983 batch) and has served in various field and secretariat positions in India in the Government of Karnataka and Government of India. He also served as Adviser to the Executive Director (Dr. Bimal Jalan), World Bank during 1994-97 and as Secretary, Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister from July 01, 2010 till 13th August, 2012. He is the IEPF Chair Professor in Regulatory Economics, established with the support of the Investor Education and Protection Fund Authority of the Government of India. Prior to his retirement from public service, he served as the Union Secretary in the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. Trained in economics, finance, and law, Dr Krishnan has chaired or served as a member of several Government of India committees, including the Krishnan Committee on Cross Border Insolvency Rules/Regulation Committee, the Krishnan Committee on Comprehensive Regulation of Credit Rating Agencies, the T K Viswanathan Committee on Reform of Bankruptcy Laws in India.
Dr. Suryaprakash Misra<
After returning from the USA with an M.S. (Applied Economics & Statistics) from Clemson University, Dr. Suryaprakash Misra joined the School of Law, KIIT University, Bhubaneswar in January 2010 as an Assistant Professor (Economics) – II, and was there till August 2012. Subsequently, he was with NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad, as an Assistant Professor (Economics). Presently, he is the Assistant Professor (Economics) at the National Law University, Delhi. He has academic publications on various sub-disciplines of Economics such as Microeconomic Theory, Bargaining Theory, Industrial Organization, Development Economics, International Trade, Poverty and Inequality, Public Finance/ Economics and Law and Economics.
Mr. Lalit Panda<
Mr. Panda is a graduate of the Gujarat National Law University, Gandhinagar, and has been working in the Public Law team at the Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy, New Delhi since 2017. Prior to joining Vidhi, he worked briefly as a Consultant with the 21st Law Commission of India. At Vidhi, he has worked in the broad areas of law and technology, regulation, and constitutional law, providing legal and policy research on subjects such as data protection, higher education, election law, and fiscal federalism as a Samvidhaan Fellow, his interest lies in interdisciplinary research into the equal protection guarantee in the Indian Constitution, examining a range of recent and long-standing controversies regarding the right to equality through the lens of Law & Economics.
WHO SHOULD REGISTER
The course has no restrictions in terms of qualification for the participants and all students, research associates, practitioners, academicians and those who are interested in the practical side of public policy, economics and constitutional law are open to register for the course.
Kindly note that the participation shall be confirmed on a first-come-first-serve basis and only limited slots are available. The last date for registration is 20th January 2022.

About the Workshop
In August 2021, the retreat of the United States from its longest war in history has opened gates to several changes and challenges in the global geopolitical environment. The fall of Kabul into the hands of the Taliban or the Islamic Emirate has prompted many questions among the global communities ranging from International Security, Human Rights, Terrorism, and Militant competition, among others.?As a consequence, International academia and the strategic community have naturally shifted conversations and research towards what is now dubbed as the ‘New Great Game’. As pointed by renowned academicians, these developments in Afghanistan are never an endgame, but a game in progress. The workshop is a humble effort to deconstruct the Afghanistan debacle to equip young minds on the nuances of major geopolitical developments in Afghanistan and their implications for India’s Foreign Policy. This program shall ensure the delivery of a series of lectures from experts on the ongoing crisis in Afghanistan ranging from issues on Foreign Policy, Terrorism and Militant competition, Human Rights, and International Law among others.

International Webinar on Leadership and Participation of Persons with Disabilities towards an Inclusive, Accessible and Sustainable Post-Covid-19 World – to be organised by CDLA, NLUO in association with Sahaya on 3 December 2021<
Our world, at present, has a population of more than 7 billion people, of which many millions live with some form of disability. Celebrating the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on 3 December every year constitutes an attempt to raise awareness regarding the social, political, economic, and cultural aspects of the lives of such Persons with Disabilities and to promote their rights, well-being, and development.?/p>
Covid-19 has had a huge impact in all sectors and in the lives of all. Persons with Disabilities have been one of the most adversely affected groups. In this regard, the Centre for Disability Law and Advocacy, National Law University Odisha in collaboration with Sahaya is organizing an International Webinar on ‘Leadership and Participation of Persons with Disabilities towards an Inclusive, Accessible and Sustainable Post-Covid-19 World‘ on 3 December 2021 (Friday) from 5 pm onwards.
The Centre for Disability Law, NLU Odisha was set up with the aim of fostering and supporting initiatives in the field of Disability Law and Social Justice. Sahaya (Indian Red Cross Society’s Centre for Special Children – Odisha Branch) has been working towards offering a platform to Children with Disabilities and those from disadvantageous backgrounds since 1991.
The speakers for the International Webinar will include Prof. Krishan Mahajan, who is a Senior Advocate at the Supreme Court of India; Mr. Santosh Rungta, who is a Senior Advocate at the Delhi High Court; Rev. Badulle Dhammissara Bhanthe, who is the Executive Director of Sudaru Piyasa, Sri Lanka; Mr. Sanjay Panda, a retired IAS officer; Mrs. Ananya Das, Commissioner, CMC; Dr. Chandrika Prasad Dash, Director of the Red Cross Blood Bank, Cuttack among others.
