About the Speaker:<<

It gives us immense pleasure to announce that the interactive session will be taken up by Mr. Pallab Das<. Mr. Das is an Assistant professor of Law at Bennett University and was a former faculty at NLU Odisha. He completed his LLM from Swansea University, United Kingdom on an International Excellence Scholarship, 2015 with specialization in International Commercial and Maritime Law and; his BSL.LLB from ILS Law College, Pune where he was ranked 8th in Pune University. He got selected on scholarship and completed a Diploma in International Commercial Arbitration from Austrian Arbitration Academy, Sommerhochshule, Vienna in 2018. He has written many articles and also assisted in writing a book “Justice for Women: Legal Compendium” (2015), Odisha State Commission for Women, Government of Odisha, India. He is also the editor of the book on maritime law i.e. “Through the lens of Maritime Law: A world view” Centre for Maritime Law, National Law University Odisha (1st edn. 2020). He has also edited the 2nd edition of the book “Maritime Jurisdiction and Admiralty law in India”. His areas of interests include International Maritime Law, International Commercial and Investment Arbitration, Criminal Law, Legal Methods, Evidence Law, and Transfer of Property Act.

Prior to joining NLUO, he practiced in the High court of Odisha and also worked as a Civil Judge, Odisha Judicial Services. He ranked 5th in the Odisha Judicial Services 2013. Further, he is a qualified West law UK researcher and also a member of Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, London and Associate member of Asian Institute of Alternate Dispute Resolution, Malaysia.

To mark the anniversary of the adoption of India’s Constitution on Nov. 26, 1949, in 2015 the Government of India decided to observe 26th November as ‘Constitution Day’ or Samvidhan Diwas.

This year ‘Constitution Day’ is a part of year-long nationwide celebrations starting from 26th Nov. 2019?till 26th Nov. 2020 during which a number of activities with special emphasis on Fundamental Duties have been planned by UGC-Ministry of Education and Department of Justice, Government of India throughout the year with the active participation of HEIs. About the Speakers<

  • The first speaker for the session shall be Dr Jagannath Ambagudia.

Dr Jagannath Ambagudia is Dean, School of Social Sciences and Humanities, and Associate Professor at the Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies, School of Social Sciences and Humanities, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Guwahati Campus. Previously, he taught at Rajdhani College, University of Delhi and National Law School of India University, Bangalore. His area of interest lies on various dynamics of Adivasi society, especially on the issues of social discrimination, social exclusion and inclusion, marginalization, development, deprivation, preferential treatment, distributive justice and community conflict.

He is the author of ‘Adivasis, Migrants and the State in India’ (London and New York: Routledge) and has edited the volume, ‘Handbook of Tribal Politics in India’ along with Prof. Virginius Xaxa.

Dr Jagannath Ambagudia shall discuss on how the emergency-like pandemic situation has affected the tribal community as a whole and how they have managed to cope up with the same.

  • The second speaker for the session is Mr Sandeep Kumar Pattnaik.

Mr. Sandeep Kumar Pattnaik works with Center For Public Policy Alternatives (CPPA), Bhubaneswar, Odisha. He was associated with the National Center for Advocacy Studies. (NCAS) Pune, India for more than a decade. He is currently engaged in undertaking capacity building programmes on People-centred advocacy, action research, writing policy and legislative briefs on the rights of tribals, dalits, women, children and landless labourers over land, forest and other natural resources. He is involved in undertaking research and organizing public hearings of the displaced persons by mining, dams and industrial expansion, conducting fact-finding studies on the forced eviction of indigenous people from their land and also filing cases in non-judicial redress forums. He is in the steering committee members of the International Campaign for the Ratification of the Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Economic Social Cultural Rights (ICESCR).

Mr. Sandeep Kumar Pattnaik shall enlighten us on the topic, “Community control over natural resources?: Challenges and Way forward amid Covid 19”

Trademarks are essential intellectual property tools, ensuring brand performance, and consumer certainty. There are however many instances where practices by groups can lead to the refusal of registration of trademarks. One such area is the factor of “Discrimination” as the grounds for refusing a trademark application. To understand the practice and the requirements behind the extensive depth of trademark intricacies, the webinar envisions to highlight the main problems, solutions and practices in this area.

For the webinar session, the First Speaker joining us is Mr. Ranjan Narula, Managing Partner, RNA Technologies, and IPR Attorneys.

Mr. Ranjan is the founder of the specialist IP law firm, RNA Technology and IP Attorneys, and currently works as a Managing Partner at the firm. With seven years of post-qualification IP experience (PQE) in working with organisations as an in-house counsel, to contentious and non-contentious roles. Mr. Ranjan has a mixture of both international and domestic experience working towards providing commercial solutions and providing acute awareness on international IP service. Mr. Rajiv is a Partner with RNA Technology and IP Attorneys, and also the head of their prosecution practice, doing transactional work related to IP/Commercial laws. With an extensive experience of above 25 years in intellectual property matters, including portfolio management assistance to fortune 500 companies, Mr. Rajiv has extensive knowledge on the intricacies of the field, with operational know-how. Mr. Rajiv, has also handled multiple commercial agreements in reference to foreign collaborations, and joint ventures, where royalty payment and licensing issues involving intellectual property is in focus. He has advised a wide spectrum of industries such as pharmaceutical, confectionery, healthcare, hospitality, real estate, e-commerce, and software, and hardware technology companies, FMCG, oil and gas, education, along with several startups etc. Mr. Rajiv, also works in an advisory capacity with the government departments/organizations in developing and protecting their brands in India.

Mr. Rajiv, has also participated in multiple international conferences, promoting the Firm’s interests, and has gained the “highly recommended” lawyer for Trademark Prosecution/Litigation matters in India by Leaders League and Intelligence Report & Directory Series. Mr. Rajiv’s name also finds mention in the World Trade Mark Review (WTR) as a legal expert in this field. Authoring multiple papers in leading publications, he has also been active in academic discourses like, national and international events and webinars. Ms. Saba Naqvi<?s an author, journalist, and a commentator. She is one of India’s best-known political analysts. An Oxford alumnus, she was a political editor with the Outlook Magazine under the legendary Mr. Vinod Mehta. She is now a leading name in national dailies and is often called to share her opinions on leading news channels.

Mr. Harssh Poddar<?s an IPS officer. After graduating from WBNUJS in 2008, he read for the BCL at Oxford University on a Chevening Scholarship and thereafter worked with Clifford Chance LLP, a London based Magic Circle law firm. Mr. Poddar cleared the Civil Services Examination in 2013 and came back to serve the nation. An all-rounder in college, Mr. Poddar is credited to be one of the strongest forces behind the origin of the NUJS Parliamentary Debate and the NUJS Law Review. A decorated police officer, Mr. Poddar is the youngest recipient of G-Files award for his exceptional work as a civil servant.
