“IDIA Odisha Conducted Amalgam: a Creative Expressions Competition.”

IDIA Odisha has been actively functioning for more than 5 years now and has been striving hard to achieve the targets set by IDIA. After organizing a series of successful events, The social media and fundraising team of IDIA conducted its flagship event, AMALGAM, the legal creative writing competition. The preparations for this event had already commenced in the previous semester and it was concluded in the month of April, 2021. Despite the limitations posed by the COVID-19 lockdown, due to which our major yearly sponsors had suffered losses, we managed to raise a sum of over Rs. 30,000/-. The event saw huge participation where creative writers from all over the country put their thinking caps on and participated in competitions like poetry and drama writing, fiction and prose. All of this collectively led to the event becoming a huge success and consequently contributed towards the greater cause of IDIA as the proceeds from this event assisted in the education of various law aspirants from across the country.

With the advent of the second wave, COVID 19 continues to impact the lives of the people in multiple ways. The Legal Aid Society, NLUO in pursuance of our objective to serve the society especially in these uncertain times has collaborated with NYAAYA (Vidhi Centre) on their newly launched initiative. Nyaaya has launched COVID Whatsapp helpline number to assist people by answering any legal question that they may have during the existing crises. Any person will be able to reach us either through Whatsapp message or voice note on Whatsapp helpline number or through social media handles and?sk their doubts on legal processes, information and rights.
The purpose of this helpline is to empower people with the knowledge of their rights and enable them to take action. The services were primarily provided in English, Hindi, Kannada, Bangla and Gujarat.?Now through this collaboration these services will be provided in Odia too.

“NLUO (CRAMON) Organised a Guest Talk by Mr.Ranjan Panda, Waterman of Odisha on World Environment Day 2021”

On 5th June 2021, CRAMON had organised a Guest Lecture for the NLUO Community. The Guest Speaker was Mr Ranjan Panda.
“On the occasion of World Environment Day, the Centre for Research and Management of Natural Resources had the fortune of hosting the ‘Waterman of Odisha’, Mr Ranjan Kishore Panda. After being introduced by a committee member, the President awardee initiated his eloquent presentation by discussing the theme for this year’s World Environment Day: Ecosystem Restoration.
Thereafter, Mr Panda proceeded to elucidate upon the importance of water conservation and further asserted that blatant neglect in this regard by the World Community has resulted in the serious denigration of our climate and environment.
In the second limb of his speech, the ‘Climate Crusader’ focused on the impact that climate change has had on the World Community and elaborated on a few of its negative effects, namely: the creation of new desert regions, the issues related to crop production, and the rise in sea levels and the resultant disasters that are being observed around the World. While concluding his discourse, Mr Panda urged the budding young lawyers to actively engage in environment-related legal issues.
The Centre is thankful to Mr Panda for agreeing to be the guest speaker on such an important occasion. It also extends a token of gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof Ved Kumari, for gracing the event with her presence.”

The Centre for Tribal Studies, NLUO conducted a webinar on the topic “Impact on Tribal Tradition and Livelihood Post the Emergence of Naxalism’, on 23rd of May at 3 pm. Dr. Kaplia Khemundu, Professor, Central University Koraput and Dr. Debendra Kumar Biswal, Central University Jharkhand were the esteemed speakers for the event. Vice-Chancellor, NLUO, Prof. Ved Kumari, graced the event and actively participated through-out the event. The webinar covered social and legal aspects of Naxalism in association with Tribal Affairs.
The discussion covered the points related to the cause, agenda and solutions of issues in the domain of Naxalism. The webinar also addressed the government policies and what measures can be implemented for having a peaceful relation with the tribals. Several students, professors, teachers and other delegates participated in the event and actively interacted with the speakers.
The Centre for Tribal Studies on behalf of NLUO extends hertiest gratitude to Dr. Kapila Khemundu and Dr. Debendra Kumar Biswal for their valuable and informative thoughts and also to all the participants for their participation.

Under the leadership of the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ved Kumari and the Registrar Prof. Yogesh Pratap Singh, National Law University Odisha with the help of Chief District Medical and Public Health Office (CDMO) Cuttack successfully organised COVID-19 vaccination camp for the faculty members, non-teaching Staff, security, gardening, house-keeping personnel and their family members on Saturday i.e. 22-05-2021. More than 170 persons between the age group of 18-44 years got their first dose of vaccine.

The Centre for Corporate Law conducted the workshop for ‘Practical Aspects of Due Diligence’ on 10th and 11th April 2021 by Mr. Anshuman Vikram Singh. The session covered the explanation of the underlying structure of due diligence to be carried out in corporate transactions. The discussion also covered the points to be remembered in company law, contract law, Foreign exchange management law, social security legislations, IPR, etc.
Every year Mr. Anshuman takes out the time from his busy schedule to teach the students of NLUO the practical aspects of due diligence and we couldn’t be more grateful! Hope the experience was an enriching one for the students and we look forward to such productive collaborations in the future as well!

Virtual Consultation on Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Amendment Bill, 2021
The Centre for Child Rights, National Law University Odisha organized virtual consultation on April 3rd, 2021 to discuss and deliberate upon the usefulness and adversaries of the provisions in the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Amendment Bill, 2021 in practical administration of juvenile justice in the perspective of the best interest of the child.
?he objectives of the Consultation were to :-
- Understand the implication of changes in the practice of juvenile justice administration and the accountability among the multi-stakeholders;
- Collect opinions of?egal professionals, policy makers, academics, child rights activists, civil society organizations to identify key areas and other cross cutting issues?hich are still untouched in juvenile justice law or child protection policy;
- Formulate action oriented recommendations and advocacy issues ?
Consultation was attended by ninety seven persons including judges, lawyers, academicians, child rights commission, bureaucrats, child rights activists and the functionaries of Juvenile Justice Boards, Child Welfare Committees, District Child Protection Units, Child Care Institutions and Child Rights Centers of various National Law Universities, The consultation was enriched by the presence of the following speakers and panelists of great eminence.

The consultation made a threadbare discussions on the impact of changes in the practice of juvenile justice administration and the consequence and effectiveness of the adoption order by the District Magistrate by the virtue of the Amendment Bill, 2021.?The Consultation resolved that recommendations and opinions emerged from the discussions shall be submitted to the Minister of Women and Child Development, Government of India for consideration and appropriate action.
