SINGLE CREDIT COURSE ON FOUNDATION OF ANIMAL LAW

The “Foundation of Animal Law in India” is a one-credit course designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the philosophical and jurisprudential aspects of animal law. It will provide a comprehensive understanding of animal welfare and animal rights law, as well as the jurisprudence behind it essentially delineating the difference between the two and how they act as foundations for law and policy related to protection of animals. This course will also delve into the ethical considerations and legal frameworks that govern the treatment of animals in India, with a particular focus on the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. By exploring the historical, cultural, and legal contexts, students will gain a nuanced perspective on the rights and protections afforded to animals under Indian law.

The course is open for anyone who is interested to learn about the basics of animal law.

Course Objectives

  1. Remember and Understand: Identify and describe various philosophical perspectives on animal rights and welfare, such as utilitarianism, equal consideration of interests, and legal personality.
  2. Analyze and Evaluate: Examine and evaluate key legal principles and landmark cases that have shaped animal law in India.
  3. Understand and Apply: Explain the provisions, implementation, and impact of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and apply this knowledge to real-world scenarios.
  4. Analyze, Evaluate, and Create: Develop and enhance critical thinking and legal analysis skills by critically analyzing legal texts and constructing well-reasoned arguments related to animal law through case studies and discussions.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Identify various philosophical perspectives on animal rights and welfare, such as utilitarianism, equal consideration of interests, and legal personality.
  2. Describe the key concepts and theories related to the philosophical foundations of animal law.
  3. Examine key legal principles and landmark cases that have shaped animal law in India.
  4. Evaluate the impact of these legal principles and cases on the development of animal law.
  5. Explain the provisions, implementation, and impact of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
  6. Apply the knowledge of the Act to analyze real-world scenarios involving animal welfare and rights.
  7. Develop critical thinking and legal analysis skills by engaging in case studies and discussions.
  8. Critically analyze legal texts and construct well-reasoned arguments related to animal law.
