Event Summary: The CWL at National Law University Odisha, in partnership with NCW, hosted the “Regional Consultation on Law Review of Cyber Crimes Affecting Women.” This event gathered legal scholars, law enforcement officials, and judicial experts to discuss gaps in existing cyber laws and propose amendments for improved protection against online threats impacting women.
Dr. Priyanka Anand, Director of CWL, opened the session, highlighting the dual role of digital technology as both an empowering tool and a source of new challenges, particularly for women facing gender-specific cyber threats. The event was honored by Justice B. P. Satpathy, Hon’ble High Court of Odisha, who called for significant amendments to the IT Act to address issues like revenge porn and online blackmail with stricter penalties. Additional insights were shared by keynote speakers, Justice Tapen Sen of the Jharkhand High Court, and ADGP CID Shri Vinaytosh Mishra, who emphasized the need for international cooperation to counteract cyber threats.
Vice Chancellor Dr. Ved Kumari underscored the importance of victim-centered approaches in cyber laws to alleviate social stigma and trauma. The event concluded with five technical sessions addressing various aspects of cybercrime in the context of AI, focusing on data protection, gender-specific legal amendments, and public awareness.
This consultation reflects CWL and NCW’s commitment to advocating for a safer digital environment for women, with outcomes expected to inform actionable recommendations for the government.
