National Online Sensitization Session on Increasing Tobacco Industry Interference and Need for Compliance with FCTC Article 5.3

National Law University of Odisha as a part of its Project on Tobacco Control Initiatives is organising an online national consultation on the enforcement of legislation and policy formulation for advancing effective tobacco control in India. ‘The title of the consultation is on?strong>National Online Sensitization Session on Increasing Tobacco Industry Interference and Need for Compliance with FCTC Article 5.3 on May 26, 2023 (Friday) from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.

 

The sensitization session aims at providing an overview of the challenges posed by the increasing interference by the tobacco industry in the everyday state functioning towards public health and the implementation of tobacco control policy. The session will acquaint all the relevant stakeholders of the urgent need to develop and adopt national policy in compliance with Article 5.3 of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. Case studies from successful FCTC Article 5.3 policy will also be highlighted.

 

Representative from Ministry of Health, National Tobacco Control experts, Civil Society representatives and International Expert on tobacco industry interference will explain the importance and significance of Increasing Tobacco Industry Interference and Need for Compliance with FCTC Article 5.3. This initiative is essential to ensure that tobacco control laws are effectively implemented and enforced to protect public health and reduce the burden of tobacco-related diseases in India. Participants will have a clear understanding of the negative impact of tobacco industry interference and the importance of compliance with FCTC Article 5.3. They will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to develop a national policy to prevent tobacco industry interference.

 

Stronger policy formulation and effective law enforcement can play a crucial role in reducing tobacco consumption and improving public health outcomes. Overall, the online national consultation on of Increasing Tobacco Industry Interference and Need for Compliance with FCTC Article 5.3 for advancing effective tobacco control in India is a positive step towards addressing this critical public health issue and promoting effective policy and enforcement measures to reduce tobacco use.
